Sau thành công của 4 Months 3 Weeks 2 Days và Tales From the Golden Age, Cristian Mungiu tiếp tục chinh phục những người yêu thích điện ảnh thực thụ bằng tuyệt phẩm Beyond the Hills (Bên kia ngọn đồi). Bộ phim xoay quanh tình bạn của hai người phụ nữ trẻ Alina (Cristina Flutur) và Voichita (Cosmina Stratan). Lớn lên cùng nhau tại trại trẻ mồ côi, hoàn cảnh và môi trường vô tình khiến họ phát triển tình cảm vượt qua mức tình bạn đồng giới thông thường. Thời gian trôi đi, cuộc đời biến chuyển, suy nghĩ của mỗi người cũng biến chuyển. Voichita sau một thời gian sang Đức làm việc quay về tìm lại Alina, hiện đang là bà sơ tại Moldavia.
