Bối cảnh của phim là thành phố Chicago năm 2035. Ở thời điểm này, công nghệ robot cực kì phát triển với những loại robot giống con người và chúng thông dụng như bất kì một loại máy móc nào khác. Nhân vật chính trong phim là Del Spooner, một thanh tra cảnh sát vừa mất đi vợ con và không hề tin tưởng vào robot. Spooner nhận được thông tin về cái chết của tiến sĩ Alfred Lanning, người tạo nên 3 điều luật của robot và đồng sáng lập của công ty U.S Robotics (USR) chuyên sản xuất robot và công nghệ robot. Cái chết của tiến sĩ Lanning xảy ra sau khi một thế hệ robot mới có tên NS-5 ra đời. Đây là một thế hệ robot tân tiến, được kết nối với một máy chủ có tên VIKL được đặt tại trụ sở của USR. Hiện trường cho thấy có vẻ như tiến sĩ Lanning đã tự sát. Tuy nhiên, Spooner lại nghĩ khác và tiến hành điều tra lại. Với sự giúp đỡ của tiến sĩ Susan Calvin, một chuyên gia về tâm lí robot, Spooner kiểm tra văn phòng của Lanning và hướng mọi sự nghi ngờ vào một con robot NS-5 có tên Sonny. Nhưng những gì mà anh phát hiện ra sau đó lại không hề đơn giản như vậy.
